Although the Gynie team celebrates women every day – we can’t help but celebrate Women’s History Month every year!

This time around we wanted to bring some awareness on how this incredible month originated. Women’s History Month has been celebrated for over 30 years in the United States and is now becoming a worldwide movement! What better way is there to celebrate gender equality, artists, entrepreneurs, activists, mothers, and every single woman on this planet than coming together to unite and empower each other?

History

Women’s History Month began in 1978 in a Sonoma County school district in California. It started out as a local “Women’s History Week” celebration around the week of March 8thto correlate with International Women’s Day. During this time, women in history were recognized and added to the curriculum for the students.  Quickly, other counties in California started to take notice and began to participate in celebrating “Women’s History Week” as well.

It soon became so popular that two years later, the National Women History Alliance submitted for Women’s History Week to have national recognition. The women were successful! The same year, the President declared the Week of March 8thto become National Women’s History Week!

Just a few years later in 1987, Congress designated the whole month of March as “Women’s History Month” and year after year, March continued to be known as “Women’s History Month”.

This Year

Each and every year the National Women’s History Alliance dedicates a theme to be celebrated. This year for 2019 the theme is “Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence”. This theme is dedicated to honoring “women who have led efforts to end war, violence, and injustice, and pioneered the use of nonviolence to change society.”

Why it Matters

Women’s efforts to change society are forever engraved into our nation for the better. Everything from being told we aren’t qualified to be paid less in the workforce – women have built incredibly thick-skin and have become more strong and powerful as time progresses.

There are ways to not repeat history and change society in peace, through knowledge, and strength.

At Gynie, we believe it is important to stand in unity with all women to celebrate each other and build a safe community to rise each other up!

Continue the Celebration

The whole month is definitely something to celebrate! However, today March 8th is also International Woman’s Day.  This global day began in 1911 and has been continuously supported by millions of people all over the world.  International Women’s Day is exciting because the theme this year is Balance for Better.

We all play a role in improving our society, together let’s create more awareness by participating and speaking up about the problem.

Conclusion

Celebrating Women’s History Month to us is about celebrating all women. That includes our mom’s, our sisters, or grandma’s, our friends, and those in history that fought peacefully for our voices to be able to be heard.
